Well, I only briefly scanned the article you linked. However, I read a similar story on Yahoo! today that mentioned MS will still provide support to customers owning MS Office. I give them props for that, at least.
I lived in Redmond for a year a year ago Nice place....
Anyway though...I don't see how $290 million is a problem or them. They've probably made more of sales from the software to profit. I bet they knew what they were doing.
I read that this injunction does not stop MS from supporting current versions of Office and any copies sold until January sometime. After that January date, they are required to sell versions that don't infringe on this patent. So, MS isn't really screwed. Apparently, it's quite a small change so I'm sure this will affect sales in no way.
