Spyware/malaware for macs?

Hey guys. I use firefox mostly for my internet browsing and i got this popup situation that tells me that my "PC" may have malaware and it needs to be scanned.
I know that this really doesn't effect the mac so much because its not a PC so it was just some annoying program that hijacked the firefox browser. Is there a program that removes those ad programs for macs? I am running iantivirus not but im not sure it will come up with anything.

Stop browsing those porn and warez sites and the popups will mostly stop. (kind of serious there to be honest)

Getting pop ups which tell you that you need to scan for a virus etc are the oldest and dumbest trick in the book, and are usually tied to links that bring the user to a site where it installs some kind of .exe that rears its head upon the next start up. These things are deployed in order to gain some kind of sub system control, or cause some kind of browser hijack.

These things are usually only associated with Window's machines, though I'd not be so keen on hanging around any websites which was targeting ANY OS with some kind of malarchy.

In the two years I've been running OS X, I've never run into such an "add program" so the best advice I can give is to really be careful about your browsing habits.

Perhaps you can keep a really cheap pc around with Window's on it and do with it what you want .. go crazy.. Call it "The Virus" !

Oh, and to answer your question more directly, no. I don't know of any adware/malware program for OS X. I don't even use anti virus app. I only use the built in firewall as well as a hard wired firewall when I go wireless. Heck, I never even used any of that anti virus junk when I was using windows. All it ever did for me (in the few times I tested some of that stuff out) was destroy resources and produce false positives.

thanks a lot doug. Im prob just gonna delete firefox and stick with safari. I have used PC's for years and have never had a problem either really. I suppose the free stuff from warez sites are just not that worth it lol. Thanks for the info

I don't think changing your browser will make a difference - it's the sites you visit that generate the problem. You could clear your cookies cache from time to time - that might help. If you can identify the sites causing the problem you might change the cookies preferences to prevent those sites from leaving cookies.

Thanks Didymus, that's actually a good idea cause i did figure out where it came from.

You can also block popups and ads on both Safari and FF. Some will always get through but it's not a big deal. Brows all the Porn and Warez sites you want, it's your computer, you might as well enjoy it.

Simply go into Firefox Preferences > Content and select the Block Pop Up Windows option.

Don't get rid of Firefox just yet. I'm not sure.. someone else can confirm or deny this but, I don't believe Safari has the ability to add extensions.

With Firefox, use :

1. Addblock Plus

2. No Script *this extension requires a bit of knowing what it does, so use with care* It's a powerful extension if you set it up right. Worth it.
