I have a MacBook Pro with the following configuration:

Hardware Overview:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.53 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP51.007E.B05
SMC Version (system): 1.33f8
Serial Number (system): W8845DH61GA
Hardware UUID: F184DF1B-543F-5AEF-BD18-D5F1161CB8AD
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

When I use an OS X 10.6 disk to upgrade from 10.5.8 it gives me the big exclamation point and the following error:
"Mac OS X 10.6 cannot be installed on this computer"

I have read something that says to verify the partition is using the GPT (GUID) partition table but that seems to be how this is currently setup.

The following is output from the Disk Utility regarding the partition.

Disk Description : Hitachi HTS543232L9SA02 Media Total Capacity : 298.1 GB (320,072,933,376 Bytes)
Connection Bus : Serial ATA 2 Write Status : Read/Write
Connection Type : Internal S.M.A.R.T. Status : Verified
Partition Map Scheme : GUID Partition Table

It is a fresh installation of 10.5.8 because I was getting the same error when I originally tried to install 10.6 either as an upgrade or a clean install.

I would really appreciate any help.

Is this the retail disc or a disc that came with a computer?

The DVD's that come with a new Mac are made for that model with the exact specs. They are Machine Specific. You need a 10.6 Upgrade DVD which costs $29.

Gotcha, I was wondering if something like that might be the case. Thanks for the reply.
