Mac Mini won't recognize my display speakers

Any idea how to get my new Mini to recognize and use my monitors speakers? I tried both plug ins(head phones and speakers). I went to system preferences and it doesn't give me the option to select my monitor speakers. Any input appreciated.

By Plugins are you talking about the jacks in the back of the Mini? If so, only one is an audio out. The other is a Audio Input.

Yes, when I said plugins I meant jacks, sorry. My monitor is a "MAG Innovision". I'm not sure what model, I bought it in 2004 at the circuit city. I couldn't afford the Mac monitor $$$$. Which jack is "output", the one closer to the outside edge of the mini or towards the center? Thanks again for any help.

The output jack has the headphone symbol. Do you have the little speaker icon on your menu bar? If so, Option click it. What does it say about Output Device?

The one on the very edge right above the first USB port.

Yep, I'm in the headphones "jack". Under System preferences, under sound, in the output tab, it simply says "head phones", "built-in output". It offers no other selection in the box. All it will allow me to do is adjust volume and balance. ?????

What more do you want it to do? Is there sound coming out of the speakers? It sounds like it working properly here. It's a Line Output made for headphones or amplified speakers. It also doubles as an SPDIF Optical output.

My bad, I got it to working. Thanks for your help, it was a stupid mistake on my part.

Yep, it was the volume.... My G4 always shutoff its internal speaker while my monitors speakers were connected. It seems the Mini's internal speaker is louder than what my monitor speakers were tuned to previously. I took and cranked my monitor speakers to 100 from 45 as well as setting the sound volume in system preferences to 100 and presto I have sound. Sorry I wasted everyones time on a duh moment....

Hey, it happens to all of us.

The other day I was called over to help a very knowledgeable and experienced computer user. He couldn't get his computer to find his scanner. He'd spent an hour or more fussing with it. When I got there, the first thing I checked was the USB cable from the scanner. It wasn't plugged in.
