Time Machine will not open

I'm having problems with Time Machine in OSX 10.6.2; when I try to enter time machine nothing happens; it won't launch. The backups appear to be taking place normally and I can browse the backups on my external disk; but no Time Machine UI.

Has anyone seen this or have any ideas?
