Can you upgrade the video cards on the new 21.5 and 27inch iMacs, or are you stuck with what Apples feels is sufficient?

I am almost positive that you are stuck with the video card that comes in the computer.

No you cannot, the video cards are hard wired to the logic board.

Apple can take custom orders where you could put a better videocard in the core 2 duo for example but be prepared for a long wait. It can take longer than a month to recieve your imac.

From what I've seen of their innards, the iMac's look like big MacBooks with a big LCD strapped to their backs.

Custom orders will also probably come at a premium.

The iMac is a large notebook computer built vertically. The inside layout is almost the same. Regarding the selection of a graphic chipset, you can only specify a different graphic chipset when ordering the 27" model. The same applies when buying direct from an Apple store. It's whatever they currently have in stock. This time of year everything is going to be in short supply.

As far as I know, the 21.5" model only has one choice for a graphics chipset.

Special orders are a horse of a different color and I really don't know what the rules are for those. You would have to check with Apple sales to find out. But if you really want versatility in ordering a new Mac, go with a Mac Pro. :) $$$

Regards.

I thought getting an upgraded video card for $150 extra was a pretty good deal. I put in my order for such a machine on Oct 28 and as of today it hasn't yet been shipped and I have no idea when it will be.
