Virus infection on windows xp portion

Using boot camp to run windows xp.

Got infected with some sort of virus which was able to add some nasty programs (or links ) to my desktop. Had McAfee virus protection running all the time. Apparently this protection was not able to stop the virus. It disabled McAfee and had locked up my screen. After rebooting, and logging onto windows, I get a memory error and a blue screen and cannot get anything else. It just hangs there. I think it also changed the registry as well.

Any ideas on how to remove the virus without erasing all and reinstalling windows?

My mac portion works fine (for now!).

You first need to identify which virus you have. Once you do that, boot back to OS X and do a search for the removal process. In all likelihood, if you can't identify which virus it is your only recourse is to wipe Windows and reinstall.

Thanks. Is there anyway to ID the type of virus? I can see the directory via OS X but am not sure how to go about identifying the virus. Is there a way to run a virus utility program on this portion from OS X?

No, in order to remove the virus or to identify it, you'll have to do it from Windows. What about your McAfee software? Doesn't it identify it?

maybe try to boot into safe mode in your windows partition and perform a "restore".

Press F8 when you boot to windows and select safe mode.

If you can do a restore to a previous point using the "restore" utility you should be good to go.

If it tells you "cant restore to previous point" then your system files are infected.

If you cant boot to safe mode, the boot sector is infected. The only thing to do at that point is boot from the CD and reinstall. You shouldnt loose any data unless on re-install it tells you that it is going to reformat. At that point if you have anything important on the drive, you maybe could re-boot to OSX instead and burn the data from the windows partition to DVD and then go back and do the format and re-install.

I've never had to do it on a mac but i've done all of this on a PC many times so if it works on a mac then let me know please.

The virus program did not identify this at the time of the attack even though I had the protection on. All I know is that I was stuck between the messages (pop ups) appearing at my desktop. I tried to open the McAfee to scan but it would not open. I then saw these porn web sites shortcuts started to appear on my desktop. At this point I turned the computer off. Upon restart, i started getting these messages mentioned above along with a blue window screen upon log on to windows.

I cannot get to my desktop or see anything except a blue screen. So my only option is to somehow get into this partition, id the virus and either clean up and or copy the files I need to save (risk of copying the virus as well) or the last option delete/format this partition and start all over.

I can see this partition and its files from the Mac side, however, am hesitant to take any actions in case of the virus being transferred as well.

It will not infect the Mac OS X system. Virii (or viruses depending on whether you studied Latin or not) are the main danger to running Windows on your Mac. Suggest delete the partition, and do a clean install and try one of the free AV such as Avast! or AGV if McAfee is not up to the job.
