Macbook wifi not connecting using N only g

Hi i have searched the net and not yet found an answer so i hope you may be able to help? I have a Macbook running 10.6.2, network says i am able to use b,g and n, i have a Belkin N Vision running mixed mode, and my macbook is only 3 feet from the router, but it will only connect using G, if i hold the option key then click on wireless in task bar it says

PHY Mod 802.11g

Does anyone know how to fix this.

Its a Macbook 2.13ghz intel core duo running 10.6.2 wireless network adapter
802.11 a.b.g.n. belkin n1 vision set to mixed mode running 20-40 hhz, links speed 54mbp/s

i have since found out that to run at full speed using N it nets to be 500mhz
but i cant even get higher than 54, is will only connect at G.

Are you sure it's a Core Duo and not a Core 2 Duo? The Core Duo machines were "g" only.

That is what I was thinking also. I know at one point there was an N Enabler you had to download to make some macbook pros work on N.

Did this ever work on N? Did you just purchase the router?

If it's Core Duo then it is hardware limited to G. The Core 2 Duo machines came with N but it was dormant and needed to be enabled. However, with Leopard the hardware was automatically available for use, no enabler necessary. Though again, this was for Core 2 Duo machines, not Core Duo.

That is what I thought. Been so long now.

So the question remaining for the OP is do you have a Core Duo or Core2Duo Mac.

That should be a 2009 model and capable of 'n'.

My guess would be the router is set to 'g' and needs to be changed.
You can verify this by heading to System Profiler, found in Applications / Utilities or clicking the Apple on the menu bar - About This Mac - More Info.

Then check the points labeled below.

ok you are all correct, accept my router only allows mixed mode or off, i have trolled trough the belkin website and forums and found out that you can only connect to this n vision router if you have no security or wpa 2, well this is ok but it still only connects at 130 not 300, i cant run wpa 2 as my sons xbox 360 apparently does not support this. so i have to use no security, no one in my house shares or transports files accross the network so will i benifit from using n on the internet, or would g be fine. i have a 50meg connection and often get 3-4 meg dl.

Just curious, is it too late to take that router back to the place you bought it from? Seems like it's really inflexible with some of these settings and you definitely don't want to use it if the wifi is unencrypted. Personally, I'm not a really big fan of Belkin. I would recommend a D-Link DIR-655, which will definitely do 802.11G with WPA, which the XBOX should support.

If you're not sharing files, then G is more than enough for your needs since there is practically no internet connection faster than 54Mbps. Also, despite having G devices, they still benefit from the increased range of the N router, so your router isn't completely useless
