how to add special characters to keyboard

Hi!

I have macbook with hungarian keyboard (10.6 Os X) and would like to add special characters to my keyboard layout.
-for example < sign is missing i can insert it just with the character viewer, but i would like it use more frequently so i would like to assign this to a special keyboard combination for example: alt + y

How can i do this?

Yes:
System Preferences > Language & Text > Text > Symbol & Text substitution.
Use the + on the bottom of the list to add the ones you want..

I have cmdk for ⌘ (command) optk for ⌥ (option) etc.

Having no need to add special characters, I've never learned how. But, the above instructions seem to stop short of actually indicating how. That process works for setting up a keyboard shortcut for a Menu item. How does the OP set it up for a shortcut to a character that's missing?

Symbol & Text substitution list
Use the + Copy_paste the symbol to the list .. type the shortcut.

To Use: Type the shortcut in TextEdit, Mail or similar > space or return will set it.
Doesn't work on this forum.
Pages has it's own Symbol & Text substitution list..
