What Happened to Word & Excel?

The HD on my PowerBook G4, 1.33 GHz died a few days ago and I replaced it with a 250gb Western. Install went fine and I used the two "Software Install" disks that were provided with the PB. I realized that I may have lost some files that hadn't backed up to my Tb external, but I am also missing Word, Excel and who knows what else!

In addition the PB went from OSX 10.4.2 to 10.3.9 and apparently will have to pay to get back to 10.4+. Further, Safari dropped down to 1.3.2 (v312.6) and I cannot update any further without upgrading the OS.

My basic question is, why wasn't Word and Excel restored from the "Install" disks? The machine is no where near as stable while online now as it used to be. Is this just the old version of Safari that I am not used to???

P.S. I ordered 1gb of ram today. I am told that I can get up to 10.5 with my new configuration.

Where did the 10.4.2 come from? If the machine came with 10.3.9 then you would have to had purchased 10.4 Tiger and install it. You can not update 10.3.9 online to 10.4. You have to purchase the 10.4 Tiger DVD.

Also no Mac out of the box comes with Word or Excel installed. At one time Trial versions of Word and Excel that expired after 90 days came with some of the older Macs.

Re-install MS Officve as it it one of those applications that does not transfer well, Adobe software is another. Use the original install CD and you can again use the first code from the disc case.

Panther OS X.3 is old and yes buy Tiger to make it more stable and use later web browsers. Word and Excel were only on the original Microsoft discs which you have to purchase.

Sounds like you put OS X.4 Tiger on it illegally if you do not own the Tiger install discs. Look for the full retail install black coloured discs and do not buy the silver grey model specific discs as they will NOT install.

Thanks for the rapid response! I was wondering if 10.4.2 was ever available as a download? I do not remember having disks for it.

Only by pirating it and we do not support that here!

Hey, Harryb, I never pirated or supported the bootleg industry in any way! That is why I find all of this a bit puzzling?! The only app's on this machine were either supplied with it or purchased/upgraded/updated. Either 10.4.2 was available online, even for a short while, or I need to organize my office.

Ah well u pays your money and takes your chance - we are never over 90 or less than 35. Just got rid of the snow blade attachment on the ride on - living dangerously.

...as an update only, meaning to make use of it, you had to have a previous version of 10.4 installed already.
