Does anyone know when AT&T will allow internet tethering on the 3G and 3GS? Or if they will?

It's weird that they wouldn't allow the service.

I agree. I am sure they think we iphoners will bring down their fragile network.

Fragile... right! ;) Tethering is available on my phone, but it would have to be rooted. (the G1 equivalent to jailbreaking on the iPhone). And rooting just is not a good idea. It would be nice to have tethering stock though.

Actually, I think you can tether, but it costs an additional monthly fee on your bill. Right before MMS and tethering were "officially" released you were able to tether with a modified AT&T carrier profile that was floating around the internets. Didn't require JBing your phone or anything. Once it all officially came out with the update it went away. The ability to tether is controlled by the "carrier profile" from AT&T not by Apple (it's there you just can't see it without an AT&T enabled carrier profile), so my assumption is once you sign up the carrier profile will update and Tethering will work.

The few times that I used it, it worked well though.
