I deleted the directory /etc by mistake, how should I rectify this? Think I've messed up my computer pretty bad, but it should work so long as I don't log out

So, yeah, what should I do? It'd be nice if I didn't lose my data as well

And please don't say you don't have a back up or the system install discs?

Sue me

lol, yeah... I don't have a backup, but I have my 10.5 install discs.

Before I kill my Snow Leopard, can I use the 10.6 install discs from my Mac Mini to reinstall on the affected MacBook? Or are there differences in the installers?

(My copy of Snow Leopard is with a friend in another country, I don't know why either :)

You can't use the 10.6 install disk for your mini because they're specific for the mini.

Just go to your local Apple store and purchase a retail copy of Snow Leopard for $29 which will work fine to reinstall Snow Leopard on your MBP.

BTW, which "etc" did you accidently delete? Did you delete the file "etc" which is directly under the main root? Or did you delete /Private/etc ?

If it was the file, don't worry about it. If it was the directory you deleted (as noted above) then you will need to reinstall.

Regards.

Not too sure, as I can't get back into Terminal to find out. It was the one with the important stuff like the 'passwd' files. I think I'll just reinstall 10.5 now, and get a new Snow Leopard copy later, as you said...
