Hi everyone,
I'm having a problem opening MPKG's and viewing PDF's. This is the error i get when i look at MPKG's:

"Operation could not be completed. (com.apple.installer.pagecontroller error -1.)

Couldn't open "AdbeRdr920_en_US_i386.pkg"."

The problem i get with viewing ALL pdf files is this:

"Couldn’t open the file. It may be corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize."

I've tried using the osx install dvd and Disk Utility to repair disk permissions and repair disk, both completed perfectly but then i get the same error messages.

Any ideas as to how this could've happened? I'm running 10.5.8 on a unibody from mid 2009, 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo.
Thanks!

For the Preview error, I'd try moving it's preference file to the desktop, log out and back in

It's located at Users / your user / Preferences / com.apple.preview.plist

You might try the other three Preview preference files if that single one doesn't do the trick. For verification, I would try opening some pdf's that were installed with the original system. These files can be deleted if it works or just moved back to the original location. Make sure you test with pdf's that have been on your system for awhile and you know work, nothing new or that have never been opened.

As to the Adobe install pagecontroller error, if that is the only pkg with the error, it's a bad download.

Did the preference files get Preview working again?

Not sure where to go really. Think I'd try downloading the 10.5.8 combo update and running that.

If it comes back with an error and will not install either, open up installer.app and open the combo update direct from there.
installer.app can be found in System / Library / CoreServices

I downloaded the 10.5.8., again nothing changed. The installation for the combo update went smoothly, however.

PDF files still unreadable, preference files didn't change anything either.

Any other suggestions? Thanks again for the help

Did the combo update install directly from the dmg or did you have to launch install.app to get it to work?

Which leads me back to believing you have a bad download on any other pkg file giving you an error.

That error points to the installer being unable to read the pkg contents, whether download or disc.
