The hard drive for my G5 just went out... totally dead, and I can't even reformat it. I backed up my files a few months prior so not a big deal. Now I just want a new reasonable hard drive to replace the original, but I'm not sure where to start. Any suggestions? Keeping in mind that I will use it a few more months then try to sell it, so not looking to invest a lot of money....

Almost any SATA drive will work. The bus on those machines was rated at 1.5 Gbps. but I think the faster drives will back down to that speed. It does support larger drives over (128). Not sure if the capacity tops out at 500 GB per drive. I might have misunderstood Mactracker.

I ran a 2 Gig G5 for quite a while with one 250 GB boot drive and one 500 GB drive which had a system clone plus lots of data. You can also try theAccelerate Your Mac! Mac Drive Upgrades/Compatibility Database. You can search there for reports from other users about drives they have used successfully.

Be aware that it may be cheaper to purchase a SATA 1 drive, as the double speed will be wasted and not achievable. Also, on occasions the SATA 2 3GB/s drive may not have the capacity to be backwards compatible with the 1.5GB/s transfer rate and it is necessary to 'throttle' the drive back.

This is achieved using jumpers.

If you do have issues with the SATA II 3.0 drive and the SATA 1 1.5 on the PowerMac G5, all the major brands I have seen have jumper pins you can force it to 1.5 like Harry mentioned.

thanks for that. i asked about what size drives would be OK in a G5 the other week & didn't get a definitive answer.
i did a few searches on various forums & mac resources & couldn't turn up anything from anyone giving an account that their G5 can "see" all of a 1TB or larger drive :Smirk:

Under Disk Utilities its see it as 1.4TB.
