The only downside is you only get a one year warranty on them. Anything happens after that, your screwed. Can you even tell they are not new machines ? I have heard that are good as new if not better (tested before releasing a 2nd time) Is there any reason to avoid them?

All Mac's (including new ones) have a standard 1 year warranty. All Macs (including refurbs) have the option to extend the warranty out to 3 years via Applecare. Nothing new there.

Nope.
All our 4 macs are Refurbs. They all are in perfect condition, except for one MacBook Pro with some small blemishes.
