I am getting ready to purchase a 13 or 15 MBP - has anyone bought a refurb from Apple online that they have not been happy with? Thx, Steve

Can you even tell they are not new machines ? I have heard that are good as new if not better (tested before releasing a 2nd time) Is there any reason to avoid them?

The only downside is you only get a one year warranty on them. Anything happens after that, your screwed.

All Mac's (including new ones) have a standard 1 year warranty. All Macs (including refurbs) have the option to extend the warranty out to 3 years via Applecare. Nothing new there.

Just got a 15" macbook pro late 2006 in very good condiction and already have office 2008 including sp1. It came with lepoard 10.5 and it updated to 10.5.8. The only thing i need to find out is that it cut off on me at 85% battery life? but other than that I can live with it. love'n it dude and i will be putting in paralle later to day for windows 7. I say go for it..... I also have a 500 HD and will being adding 2gigs more memory...

Nope.
All our 4 macs are Refurbs. They all are in perfect condition, except for one MacBook Pro with some small blemishes.

The anodizing wasn't applied properly and it seems like a small screwdriver hit beside the trackpad.
But they are just a cosmetic thing and its not to big a deal for us. But if you want to be sure you get a perfect macbook pro, then buy a new one. But I'd rather go refurb, save a few bucks and buy myself some software with it.

Update:
Oh, and the warranty is the same as with a new one, 1 Year

Not true. You can purchase AppleCare to extend to three years, as long as you purchase the machine from Apple.

You can have that repaired if you want to. The warranty does cover any defects as though it were a new machine.

Too many...
My current mbp 15 is a refurbished model. I traded the same spec model that I had bought brand new from the apple store when I found out about the refurbished macs available. I will for sure get another refurbished model next time. It was definitely worth it for the experience and money(even though i had to pay to return it, I still came out on top). As you can tell, I too would recommend it! The warranty is the same too, and applecare is the same as a new mac.

Aside from one screw, my 17" Macbook Pro has been nothing but perfect. I would recommend a referb as well.

Bought a refurbished Macbook Pro before the new line was announced. Machine was perfect and have not had one single issue with it. Can't tell that it was refurbished. Only difference is the bland, brown box it came in versus the white one with a new purchase. They even gave me the approximately $300 difference when the price dropped on the refurbished model I bought (called with within 2 weeks of purchase).

i bought a late 2008 mbp refurb, it's great. it looks brand new and performs that way as well. it's been said that refurbs are actually safer than new sometimes as they have been completely gone through to make sure everything works, as opposed to the new ones which come off the line and into a box. i would definately buy refurb again...and again...and again.
plus like it's been said, same product, less money, and it's been tested to make sure it works.
