Macbook pro [late 2006] external display support?

I have a late 2006, 15.4-inch: 1.83GHz model (MA463LL/A). I've just purchased a new 23" display, and, in monitor preferences... the largest available resolution I can select for the Acer P235H external display is 1920 x 1080. Apple lists online in the technical specs for this model (MacBook Pro - Technical Specifications) that the ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics processor, "simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on an external display, both at millions of colors".

Is this not true? Is there any type of graphics firmware or graphics driver update that I can do in order to gain support for my new display?

For the graphics card to push a higher resolution, #1, you have to have a monitor capable of that resolution.

The native resolution of that particular Acer is 1920x1080. You are not going to get that monitor to do any better no matter what graphics adapter or drivers you are using. That's all the pixels it has.

I do declare! You certainly have a point. Oh... you thought I'd read the specs on this monitor before I bought it didn't you? And of course... why wouldn't I just expect my desktop to dramatically appear in 16x9 WideScreen format, anyway? Careful, don't let me drip any egg on you.

The higher resolution is the same format.

Currently, I believe the only monitors capable of 2560x1600 resolution are 30" monitors. Plus you need a crappy $100 DVI-D cable from Apple that tends to work only when it wants to.
