So I have a presentation in a week and just noticed today my MBP has no video out like a traditional PC would have. So I'm wondering what I need to purchase to make this work. I know I need a Female video for one end but what for the other end?

It is to hook up to a projector in my classroom, everything is wired into a counter top in the front of the class. With a typical video output like this....
http://www.addictivetips.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/dvi-d.jpg I believe, at least this general look....

Thanks for the help in advance

You're welcome. You can pick one up at your local Apple Store. Also, make sure it's the mini DisplayPort to DVI, the mini-DVI to DVI will not fit!

And make sure you test.

Days before your presentation if possible.

Quick question, what is the difference between the apple product and an offbrand one that is 1/3 the price? Is this going to make the conversion lower quality i would assume?

I am also reading the reviews for this product, and I have been reading it does not have the 4 other pins that most male DVI connectors have. . .

Why I will be searching more on this. If this adapter really does not have the 4 other pins for most male connections, 3rd party will have to be the way to go. I would hate to have you spend almost $30 on something that won't work.

The Apple one is going to be a DVI-D : is digital only

The one you are looking at from Amazon, DVI-I : should be both digital and analog.
Although, my guess from reading a couple of the reviews, it still only carries the digital signal because that is all the mini-display port outputs via a DVI adapter. It will allow you to connect a DVI-I connector to it instead of the need for a new DVI-D cable and will send a signal to a digital port.

If however, the port on the projector is actually analog only, you still will not get a picture even though everything fits together.

For the best answer, the make/model # and/or the specifications of the projector need to be known.
Most device input ports that are DVI-I will accept both analog and digital signals.
A great many of the early DVI connections still accepted only analog.

I go to the University of Kansas, so i would assume it's very recent technology, not sure if that matters??

Can you tell if it is digital or only analog by the look of the Male connector? Or is it just in the projector itself?

Well I may just head to the school, i'm pretty sure all the classrooms are open pretty late, I'll let you know.

Appreciate all the advice though, very helpful!!

Yes, get adapters that are mini DispayPort to DVI-I. I am reading that Apple's adapter is only DVI-D, which only runs the digital signal, thus not having the extra 4 holes. Here is a great article I found about DVI. Has a lot of information.

And bobtomay beat me to it!

I can tell what cable/connector it is by the appearance.
The specs of the display device are always good to know and help make things much easier.

Here is a good one - this shows the male pin configuration of the different DVI.
The female DVI will typically have the holes to match the Dual Link appearance.

One thing to note - almost all cables/adapters that I have ordered from Amazon and ship from a 3rd party, invariably take over a week to receive.

:) Knowing what you've got makes it a lot easier.

When you get that adapter, plug it in and then check software updates.
Apple has come out with updates for that adapter.
Not sure if it will find the update without it being plugged into a display or not.
And it's possible that it's been included in the 10.6.2 update also.
