How does the apple remote connect to the MacBook Pro? I have the older model and if I connect the laptop to an external monitor and close the lid, would the apple remote still work?

The Apple remote works via an infrared sensor in the front edge of the laptop, usually near the latch.

I know some folks do exactly what you want to do (close the lid & connect to an external monitor)...so the remote should work fine.

If you already have an Apple remote...just hook everything up, and give it a try.

as long as the computer is running, in closed-lid mode, the remote will work, there is no difference between running your MBP normally or with a closed lid and an external monitor/keyboard/mouse

if you want to just close the lid and maybe listen to your tunes and you don't want the lid open, you can use e.g. Insomniax to keep the computer form going to sleep when you close your lid

Okay thanks guys. I remember hearing that it connected via infrared and wasn't sure if it would connect with the lid closed. I'll probably pick up an apple remote in the near future.

Only $19 bucks at the Apple Store...less on eBay.

FWIW I just picked up the new aluminum remote tonight and it's awesome. It definitely feels better in the hands than the older plastic versions. Plus, it seems to be made with the same scratch resistant coating that the aluminum MBP's have too.

I highly recommend it.

Yeah, I'd definitely go the eBay route for something like that. I think I paid about $10 shipped.

Hmmmmm

I might go the other way ..... Buy the new remote then will HAVE to get the aluminium MBP to go with it bc it will be lost without it ... :)
