powerbook shuts down when power cord is removed

My 15" Powerbook 1.8mhz shuts down when I remove the power cord. The battery was replaced by Apple not that long ago and seems to be holding the full charge. Is this a hardware issue or software?

2GHz Mac Mini 2GB RAM 160GB 10.6.2 | MDD DP 1.25GHz G4 1.5GB RAM 10.4.11 | 233MHz iMac G3 10.3.9
Does the battery symbol on the menu bar say whether it is charging the battery? Does it show it X'ed out?

Check under System Profiler to see the stats on the battery.
