I have a Macbook Pro 13". And when I went to apple.com in search of monitors it told me that the cheapest one is $900. Can someone help me with a monitor solution? (I know "all monitors work with mac" but I have had trouble in the past)

Basically it's the size and resolution ...

Let's take 22" wide screen.

Most common res is 1920 x 1080 which is 16:9 aspect ratio.

I like 1680 x 1050 which is 16:10 aspect ratio.
This monitor has about 1" more screen size up and down compared to the other. End result, larger text ...

There is also the dock which takes room so again, 16:10 aspect ratio is better.

My humble opinion of course ...

It may be $899 but the 24" Cinema Display is sweet. You do get the built in power for your MacBook Pro, the built in speakers, USB hub, and camera. A comparable monitor without all of these built-ins would cost $600 +.

I have also been looking at buying a new monitor. I found one on Best Buy's website. An Asus 20" flat panel LCD monitor for about $160.

yeah, def. look in the refurb section on apple store website. Otherwise, pretty much anything will work. A budget might be helpful to include.
