Going to try a Virtual Box install and see how she sails. Anyone else drive it yet?

Running it right now in VBox. Got it up and running quickly which I couldn't have said for the previous FreeBSD releases (for some reason, FreeBSD pre-8.0 didn't like VBox for me).

It's acting as a Samba and Web (Apache) server for now. I don't actually intend to use it for either purpose in the VM but I am very impressed with this release. I'm actually considering moving my Linux server over to FreeBSD.

My VB install keeps aborting when I hit the "Home" key on my MBA. Ugh. Going try again in a few on the MBP.

That's odd. What point of the install is causing that?

Last I saw it was loading items into /boot. I chose to do a standard install on a 16GB slice with auto defaults and MBR. I selected all sources, binaries and X with added Linux ports. Then selected "Install from CD/DVD". Everything was transferring fine from the DVD (8.0-RELEASE-i386-dvd1.iso file). At that point, I decided to check my email and hit the "Home" or ⌘ key to release the pointer. Within a few seconds it tosses some error and says it will reboot in 5 seconds, goes back to the FreeBSD Boot Loader Menu and starts all over again. I tried several times at various points after the files started copying to the disk, but the common factor in the install diving seems to be releasing the pointer via the ⌘ key. I'm using VB 3.0.12. Weird.

Does Free BSD do a live CD like some linux distros or do you have to install it? I have a spare P4 here I could try it on if needed. Where is a good url to get it from?

Yep, they have several versions available of the release. Here's your best shot...

I had the same things happen with previous releases. I have since determined that I need to do a minimal install and once it's done, install everything else I need from ports. It's a bit more time consuming but it works.

I've been trying to figure out what it is about the left command key that's so problematic to VBox and FBSD but have come up with nothing yet.

I don't think they have a live CD (if they do, it's new to me) but they numerous install discs.

Thanks vansmith, I'll give it a try this evening with a minimal install. I generally do a minimal install with X and have never had any issues before with any of the 7 STABLEs via Parallels. I thought I'd try a full install this time since I had some disk space. Guess VB and FBSD don't like greedy installers, huh? I'll post again when I get to give it a whirl.

Yeah, it's a very weird bug. I tried downloading the DVD image twice (talk about high bandwidth usage) but both times it failed. I did narrow it down to being related to the left command key. To be safe, I don't even click in the VM anymore when installing FBSD as you can still traverse the ncurses menus without clicking in the VM (as long as the window has focus).

No joy on the FreeBSD VB installation. I did manage to get VB updated to 3.1 which was released today. I'll give it a stab tomorrow after I download the .iso CD. I don't seem to be having much luck with .gz'ed .iso DVD image right now. Too many compression algorithms messing with the original files IMHO.

If it matters, I downloaded disc 1 (CD) and it worked perfectly. Maybe it's something with the DVD image?
