External HD says it's full but it's not?

Hey all,

My external HD is 250GB and has 61GB worth of data on it. When I try to do a backup it says it only has 30GB left... I don't know why.

Not nearly enough info to provide legitimate help.

What software are you using to create the backup?

Have you deleted items from the external and then not emptied the trash?

Do you have multiple partitions on the external drive?

The backup is from Time Machine. And I've deleted it from the external HD but it doesn't show up in the trash anyways.

I don't have any partitions on it.
