external hard drive desktop vs. portable

whats better if I will be using the hd at my college dorm and at my house. the desktop ones are so much cheaper and this is why i ask. thanks cody

I guess this all depends upon how much HD space you really need. What will you be using it for ?

Portable drives are usually powered by the USB connection vs the desktop models which need to be plugged into an outlet. Makes a difference if you'll need to use the drive while traveling (in a car, on a plane, etc).

ill be using it for mostly storing hd movies on but i talked to a guy at office depot who said if i traveled with a desktop hd id have to be very careful and basically carry it with me. is this true?
