Apps to handle video files.

After 2 years, I am still not satisfied with video-handling apps on my mac.

VLC for mac is not that great. Quicktime seems to be an expensive process to run (I did not check by the way. It just appears to be like that). I can never get a decent Mplayer for some reason.

I use KMPlayer on my XP and it is so much better than any player I've seen for mac. It is fast, handles a lot of different formats without any tweaking, handles corrupted files properly.

What is your app for video and why?

I have no issues with VLC on the Mac. What is the problem you have with it?

Additionally, have you installed Perian for Quicktime?

VLC handles mkv and subtitles horribly. When the files are "corrupted", VLC fails.

I did install Perian. That is my player for mkv format. There is nothing wrong with Quicktime but I don't like it for some reason. However, I found the option of merging videos on Quicktime quite impressive.

Personally, I use Plex most of the time for watching video files on my Mac. I've been able to play most formats without problem, including switching between subtitles and audio tracks. Plex is a full "media center" front end tho, so it may not be what you're wanting. I primarily watch video files on my Mac hooked to my TV, anything that I want to watch without launching plex, then I use quicktime or vlc depending on which app I've mapped to the file container.
