What is Garageband?

I am new to Mac. What is Garagebad for? It looks like a music composing tool to me. I am not into music composing etc. How can I use this for normal uses such as converting audio files to different formats or splitting a mp3 file etc?

20" iMac C2D 2.16ghz, 13" MacBook 2.0ghz, 60gb iPod vid, 1gb nano
You can not do any of those things you are looking to do with GarageBand. Use iTunes to convert audio formats
