This is prolly the Stupid question of the month, so go easy on me please.

When I download applications, usually compressed, ultimately I wind up with an icon on the desktop that looks like a USB drive (for lack of a better description). I usually open the application, check it out but then I'm never quite sure if I need to retain the icon. My normal mode of operation is to just drag the icon off to my SuperSpacious external hard drive and ignore it for eternity.

So the question is "Should I just trash the icon after removing the application?"

Back to my old 2.2GHz C2D MB after selling my MBP and wondering what my next Mac will be :)
I take it you mean a disk image mounter... yes, you can delete it, once you have opened it, or saved the application.
Is that what you meant?

You should eject the disk image after the app is installed. Do this by right click and choose eject or drag the icon to the trash.

The original download will still be in your downloads folder. You can delete the download or save it to the external, whichever is your preference.

... I'm never quite sure if I need to retain the icon.

The icon to keep is the one placed in your Applications folder. Since you say you check 'em out, then you must've found that one. I save the disk images in case I need to reinstall. That way, I don't need to find the website and download it again. If space is not an issue, keep 'em!

Thanks folks... I like the advice about keeping the "Disk Image" over in the bulk store external drive... I can alway toss from there if I run into space limitations.
