keyboard replaced, battery installed, still not working

I replaced my v1 Macbook keyboard. Install was easy enough. Upon completion, I still had a keyboard with issues.

Without screws, it works just fine. When tracking down when it develops the problem (certain keys not working), I get to the L-shaped bracket in the battery compartment, and the problem surfaces. Keys stop working. I feel like it's a short of some sort, but my knowledge is at its limit.

Any thoughts?
