Slow Lan Speeds

Linksys WRT54GS (802.11g) Router
27in iMac hard wired
15in MBP wireless

I sent a 5GB folder of images over using the standard Finder sharing.
I monitored the speeds via iStatPro and Activity monitor.
It peaked at 2.7Mb/s

I've seen 802.11g connections do alot better then this, any opinions?

Mb/s or MB/s ?

My 802.11g at home runs at 3 MB/s max, depending on the activity and where I am in the house.

I'm hearing of a lot of "slow talk", as well as multiple dropouts with Linksys Routers....
I don't have much to add on this, but I'm sure that you will get quite a response on this... but meanwhile, I would try unplugging it for a few minutes, and going again.

Gosh, i think its me just being a newb, i always thought that a 802.11G's Lan speed can go up to 54MB/s, but i was wrong. Its Mb/s haha

So 2.7 MB/s = 16= 21.6Mb/s
I guess that's not bad, Hmmm. But still 5GB takes 30mins to transfer.

It would be faster for me to connect my external drive via Firewire800, put the 5GB folder on the drive, then take it to the other computer and copy it on to that. Firewire800 = 100MB/s. So it would take 50seconds to transfer 5GB.

Not to mention i have a eSata/express card adapter for my MBP and my HD has a eSata port.

I was really hopping the Lan speeds would be better then 2.7MB/s

A suggestion to avoid you being ' unhappy ' ....

Technical specs ( which are tested in perfect lab conditions ) are different from reality.
Copying 5 GB of data as 1 single file or 5 GB of data in multiple files is also a big difference.

Wireless was not designed for speed , it was designed for flexibility and mobility.

It is good you are comparing things, but don't let that dissapoint you.
( Unless speed of transactions is a critical requirement for your business )
