I currently have a 250GB Hitachi in my MBP, and i am looking to upgrade the internal drive to at least 500GB with at least 7200rpm. There is no rush, I'll be performing the install next summer, but i want to look into different brands ahead of time. I originally was looking at Seagate, but i am reading many reviews of people saying that their drives click a lot. Can anyone recommend a good drive brand?

I just ordered a 640GB Western Digital 5400rpm, because I wanted to get the largest capacity possible. However, I chose the WD brand because of reviews and user ratings highlighting the quiet running. I will be installing soon, so no first person recommendation, but that is why I just ordered mine.

Take a look at what's offered by "Other World Computing" (OWC). They specialize in Mac sales and carry the very best and latest in hard drives. I personally like Seagate and Western Digital drives but you can judge for yourself by reading reviews and searching through this forum.

Well I went ahead and bought my HD from best buy. I got this one

Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus 7200.4 ST9500420AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

and I have nothing negative to report about the hard drive at all. It is awesome. Great speed. Great boot times. And NO HEAT issues at all. All in all a great product. And everything went smooth as far as the install. I only had my Macbook pro 13" for about 2 weeks and upgraded it and so any novice can do it.

Why I got it?
WD and Seagate are top dogs. Went with Seagate because of 7200rpm 16mb cahce 500GB HD. And it was on sale :)

Yea eathcloud, that's the one i was looking at originally, but then Tigerdirect stopped selling it, and the other one has added protection against drops, but i read in reviews the peple said that it could cancel out the motion sensor in the MBPs, so i'm going to wait what comes out next. I wish they had a 10,000 rpm drive for notebooks.

U can get this one? However you will be paying a lot LOL. and instead of being worried about 10,000rpm just get a SSD. You get what you pay for!!!

Yea, i don't have the money for an SSD unfortunately, and the technology's not there yet in terms of the storage i need, but it might change by this summer when i make the purchase.

Yea true. I would just wait though for the price to come down. Unless you are doing some crazy intense heavy work that requires a fast HD, you would just be fine with a 500gb 7200rpm. It looks like you have a good processor and ram.

Hey Deathcloud, update on the drive?

I've been looking at this drive as well and am curious as to your opinion after using it for a few months. Hope it's not going clickity clack.

Have a good one!

(Riftah: if you end up getting that one, go through Newegg.com. It's about $20USD cheaper.)

I'm also curious. I've heard and read reviews about Seagate saying their drives make noise. Had my eye on Hitachi Travelstar 500GB 7200RPM. But I'm concerned about which is more reliable and which makes less noise.

Just doing my research at this point. :)

Hey MYmacROX, I live in Germany so I usually just do the research and *cough cough* order it off amazon. I didn't know hitachi was making a 500 Gb 7200 drive now. Since owning my macbook pro 2.33 since 2007, I've had an internal hitachi drive with not a hint of issues, so I may try my luck out on this drive since my gut is telling me that it's a crapshoot on this seagate drive. Who knows at this point. I'll keep you posted on what I go with and if I have any issues.

Yeah, my mid-2008 MBP has a hitachi 7200rpm drive that has always worked perfectly. So, that's why I was glad to see they had a 500gb/7200rpm drive now. I'll check back for your opinions once you get it installed.

Thanks!

I've been searching high and low for that hitachi 500Gb at 7200rpm, but I can't find it anywhere over here. I might have to order it from the states and have it sent to a friend's house, then maybe they can ship it over. I've been looking all day for drives and I think I've narrowed it down to that one. I also saw that Toshiba makes a 500Gb at 7200 but I can't find that one over here either. I'll keep you posted!
