I have tried DLing VLC and Media player

I have tried to DL both these programs for my Mac. When the DL finished i click on the icon and all i get is a page of mumbo jumbo.

I have only switched from PC a week or two ago and i am not the most technically minded person going so any help is very welcome.......

1. Do not download Windows Media Player - it has not been updated for OS X in about 6 years now. Doubtful it will even work in 10.6 anyway.

2. For playing wmv and wma you need to download Flip4Mac. The free one should be all you need.

3. Sounds like you're downloading the windows versions (.exe files). Those will not work in OS X. You need to grab the OS X version. Here is VLC

Just to clarify. This program means that files that would normally only play in media player will now play in quicktime??

That's correct.

However, there is nothing that I'm aware of that will play DRM'd windows media files on the Mac.

Some sites have moved to using MS's Silverlight which works around some of that.
