Cannot get to old Time Machine backups

I got a new Mac in August 2009. I am running the same external hard drive for Time Machine that I did since April 2008.

When I open Time Machine, it only shows the backups to Aug 09. When I open that drive via Finder, I see all the files back to Apr 08.

I did change the name of my computer - but I could not figure out what to do from the Apple forum pages in this case.

Is there any way to access those files from Time Machine?
