Shutdown suddenly very slow....

My current 2.26 Macbook Pro used to shut down almost instantaneously. Literally 1-2 seconds. All of a sudden, it is taking between 10-15. Minor, but pretty annoying coming from an immediate shutdown.

Any ideas what could be causing this? Heres what ive tried:

Quitting all programs before shutting down, no effect.
Ejecting and physically unplugging my TM USB Hard Drive, no effect.
Repairing permissions.


My boot time is fine, just under 30 seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

Try running a hardware check from Disk Utilities, preferably from the original OS disk.

Do you mean verifying the disk?

No. hughvane means pop in the install disc, reboot and hold down 'C" immediately after the chimes, go to Utilities and select Disk Utility and run Repair Disk from there. You are unable to repair a drive you are booted from.

Also consider booting from the original system disc, normally disc one, and running Apple Hardware Test in its full version. If you still have problems download a little utility called AppleJack, read and print the instructions, and run it on reboot.

Also try running a utility that will do system "clean up" maintenance. I recommend OnyX. Free download from here. Be sure to download the correct version for your OS X.

I never "shut down" my machine. So, thought I'd give it a try just to see.

Press of power button to login screen - 23 seconds.
Log in to functional desktop - 3 seconds.
Shut down - 20 seconds.

Tried it 3 times - the only thing that changed was shut down varied from 19-22 seconds.

Frankly, don't see that a 10-15 second shut down time is worth the effort of troubleshooting.

I would recommend Onyx as a maintenance tool if you don't already have one though.

I know its not 'bad' per se, but I enjoyed the awe factor of an instantaneous shut down

Well, nothing helped. Thanks for the suggestions though. AHT reported no issues.

Any other ideas? If not I suppose I can live with it...

Do you have VMware installed?

I have parallels 5. I do see the problem even if it is never run though.
