My friend was to update his 2007 17in MacBook Pro to solid state, we have a question about it. Is there a different power cord associated with SSD that is different than what's normally used for HDD?

No. If you get a notebook oriented drive, it will have the same power and data connectors as any old SATA drive.

I would caution your friend though - the SSD market is in turmoil right now. Might not be a bad idea to let things shake out, there are very heavy markups on Intel drives at the moment because Samsung identified a problem in its controllers. And of course, the other, cheaper drives out there have issues with "stuttering".

I would recommend reading this article (at least the first part of it) before plunking down a significant chunk of change on an SSD.

SSD's and standard HD's use the same connectors.
