The Intel models do have 5.1 support, not sure about the G4 models. Your speakers have to be optical though. 5.1 support from the Mini is only with optical, you can't plug in a set up analog 5.1 speakers.

To find out if you have optical out go to; System Preferences, Sound and then click on the 'Output' button.

If Digital Out is listed then you're set.

Mac's only support this Digital Out for 5.1 output as Stretch has mentioned. The most common set of speakers that use this would be the Logitech Z-5500.

You will also need a 3.5mm>TOSlink adapter.

If on the other hand you have an analogue set of surround speakers, have a look for a USB external soundcard that is Mac Compatible.

What you're describing is a quadrophonic setup , with that setup you will not experience true surround sound, which is either 5.1 or 7.1 etc.

No, no... I didn't say that, but from your post I understand that you have 4 speakers to connect.
I can tell you, you'll never be able to get 5.1 surround sound with only 4 speakers, you need 5 satellite speakers an 1 subwoofer, hence the "5.1".

This should be the setup for Dolby® 5.1 ...
