Well, according to Apple, in order to have higher capacity batteries while maintaining the integrity of the design, they had to make them internal with no latching mechanism. Seeing the battery modules in the teardowns I've seen, it doesn't look like it would be too great a feat to have a trapdoor and latch in the case, so I'm not sure what the real motivator is. I'd be willing to bet it's the same reason that Macs don't have a hard drive activity indicator - Steve doesn't like the aesthetic qualities.
