• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

So, I have some MTS movie files that I wish to edit in iMovie.

These files can't be imported since they were downloaded from the video camera prior to me getting my Mac (tsk, tsk iMovie...why such a hassle with this?). There are tons of posts existing that people can't get this to work.

How can I convert the MTS file into a format that iMovie likes? And what file should it be?

Does anyone have experience with this: imovie import MTS - How to import MTS video into Apple iMovie on Mac OS X with mts to imovie importing

You might want to look at VoltaicHD and Videopier.

The above tools base at least some of their conversion code on FFmpeg. Problem is that it appears that you have to download source code and compile it.
