External Hard Drive Problem

I'm new to mac so I'm still not 100% sure how to work everything...

I need to copy a large rar. file from my macbook to my external hard drive but once I have copied the file there is no option to paste to the HD and I can't drag it on either. Any ideas?
I need this file on my HD pretty urgently and I haven't a clue how I'm going to do it!

Two questions for you first before we can answer....

How large is the file?

What format is the external hard drive using? (NTFS, FAT-32, HFS+)
