17 inch 2 GHz C2D imac (5,1) with 3GB DDR2 RAM, X1600 (128MB memory) GPU - OSX 10.6.3
I have an older intel imac. And I have 2x 1GB ram sticks in it. The computer can recognise 3GB maximum. And I have ordered a 2GB ran stick to replace one of the 1GB ones. So I will have the 3GB is the computer.

My question is goes it matter which of the 2 ram slots the 2GB stick goes into?

I do not think so. The most important thing to note is being sure both sticks you got have same speed and latency, otherwise you won't get dual channel bandwidth benefit.

Frankly I'm not sure if having differing memory capacities (2 gig stick and 1 gig stick) affects dual channel bandwidth or not, but it might be a good idea to do further research. If you have 3 gigs of ram but no dual channel, then your performance might not be as high as say 2 gigs that run as one dual channel-- but again I'm not sure.

In general I think it's safe just to buy the exact same ram stick from the same company. (sites like newegg will display dual channel or tripple channel for ram packages)
