I'm trying to figure out the best (and most economical) way possible to set up a file server and backup solution for my home/small business.
My initial thought was to run OSX server, but after some hunting I was intrigued by the HP MediaSmart Servers. The MediaSmart seemed to do everything I needed except for the RAID, but seemed like it lacked the seamless integration for a Mac environment that I was looking for.
Then Apple announced the Mac mini Server. Turn ons include: seamless mac integration, OSX server. Turn offs include: price, no RAID, only 1TB of storage space.
Goals:
- File server for business documents, photos, movies & iTunes server.
- RAID configuration for backup purposes.
- Time Machine compatibility to back up each user’s home directory.
- Ability to stream movies and photos from server to TV.
Am I missing something? Should setting up a home/small business server and backup solution be this hard? Any ideas?
I've attached a diagram to show my setup. Hopefully that will help you visualize what I'm trying to do.
Thanks!
