Hi everyone,

Some of you may have seen my posts before about my problematic mac pro and I have tried to fix it but unfortunately had no luck.

Basically after it running really slow, crashing on the smallest of tasks (sending and email and then opening spaces to go to a new window to use word for example) the whole thing would freeze, fans go full pelt as if to take off and i have to turn it off. I then have to wait 5/10 minutes before it can turn it on again otherwise it wouldn't boot up.

So I thought it was hardware or a bad install of OSX or similar to bought a new HDD and did a fresh install on OSX with snow leaopard this time, put all my software back on and today it started to crash again. For example, i opened a new tab in safari and the whole machine crashed like above.

So i presume its a hardware problem, over heating? PSU problem? Any thoughts of what I can do? Or ill just bin it and use my old mac book which has survived 5 years with no problems.

Thanks for your help

If you have the original discs it came with (the gray system locked discs) you could always attempt to do a hardware test with it and see if it can determine the problem - of course getting replacement parts may be difficult - you'd probably have to scour ebay to find them if you didn't want to pay a fortune to get them brand new. Other than that, if it's by any chance still under apple care (assuming you got it) I'd say just bring it in for repair.

I would still say it's a software issue.
What applications are you installing?

I normally wouldn't suggest this, but I advise a full OS reinstall... using your original OS discs, not the Snow Leopard discs.

When the OS is installed, before you install any other software, be sure to get all of the OS updates from Software Update.

If everything is fine up to this point, then install your other applications one by one... testing things out between each install.

Called apple - they seem to think its hardware. I cant find my original tiger disk anywhere - any other way I can do a hardware test?

I could do that devilboy but the crashes are random, unless I install them one a day and try that? I have all the same software on my macbook and that doesn't crash?

Thanks for your help

I would try what "D3v1L80Y" suggests. Reinstalling the OS really is not that big of a deal...just make sure that all of your important files are backed up.

If an OS reinstall fixes everything, great!

If you are still sort of concerned about doing a fresh OS install. Buy yourself a relatively cheap 80 or 160 gig internal hard drive (like $40 bucks here in the States, or buy a used one for even less)...and do a fresh OS install on it. Then boot the computer from that new drive with the fresh OS on it.

At least with a fresh install of the OS, you can eliminate the OS as a potential problem area. If the fresh OS install works, then AWESOME, problem solved!:)

I think the big problem here is understanding the "fresh install" - the op had done that with a new HD, but then proceeded to install all of his other software - for the responders are suggesting, do a fresh install but DON'T install all of your other software to make sure the OS is stable.

also - to the OP - I don't think I'd be using Onyx just yet on SL - it's still in beta, and as you're having problems, it'd be best to stay away from anything that has any hint of incompatibility...

The new install I have just done is on a new 1.5tb seagate HDD. I have 3 other HDDs in the mac - i do notice however that there are no jumpers on any of these. does this make a difference?

Also, I just had a different type of OSX crash, i went to open a new tab in safari and the screen turned black. Computer still on, just a black screen of nothing?

Are you sure you can't find that OSX DVD that came with the machine? Running the Apple Hardware Test and also what DB suggested are good ways to find out just what is wrong.

That last crash though is interesting. Wonder if it's a Video Card issue?

The Apple Hardware Test comes with a new Mac and is usually on the first install DVD. That is why it's so important to keep that DVD at all costs. Really comes in handy for times like this. You can probably get one from Apple. Give them a call and tell them your model of the Mac Pro and tell them you lost your install DVD.

I originally thought it was a video card problem, as i first started having problems with the OSX crashing whilst playing COD and the graphics would get really laggy then crash

Is there any other software I can use to do the tests?

Also, if it is software, how comes my macbook has been fine? As its the same software on both?

Thanks for your help

Wanting to bring this thread up again. Tried a fresh install and its still happening. For example i put a USB key into the front of the mac and i get a black screen. or i watch a youtube video and i get a white screen.

I did notice that after it crashes, and i try to start up, a red light appears on the GFX card. Only when the red light doesn;t come on, does the mac boot up?

New GFX card maybe?
