I'd like to split an ntfs partition without losing the data on it. I don't really have an easy way of backing up the data on the drive otherwise I'd just do that as a safeguard. both of the partitions that I intend to create would individually be large enough that the data on it could easily be preserved on either with space leftover.

from what I gather, this wouldn't be a problem at all with an HFS+ partition but I'm nervous about the lack of compatibility for an ntfs partition.

I'm using snow leopard and presume to be using disk utility to do the job.

You can not split or otherwise move a NTFS partition using Disk Utility without the danger of losing data. Best advice: Don't attempt it. If you do not have access to a Windows machine or Linux to do the partition work, your best bet would be to use a utility which can safely work with NTFS partitions from OS X. iPartition is one such utility.
