need to be able to login to the remote mac server

Hi Guys

Thanks in advance for useful information you can give me. Here it's the situation. I work in a small office where there is a mac server with my account already setup on it.

Until this morning I was able to login in from my mac min regularly using my credential, but suddenly the mac mini stopped to answer and so I need to replace it with a new one.

Now, with this new clean machine, I'm not able anymore to get access to the remote server. When I say get access I mean to remotely login supplying my login details on the welcome screen where you normally (with a clean machine) click on an icon that grant you access with the selected local user.

I come from a Windows world, and my perception is that this mac mini must join to the remote server, like a standard windows workstation should do going into computer properties and changing from a local workgroup to a remote server.

That's what I'm not able to do, and here anybody don't know how to do that.
So I can see my files on the remote server, but I cannot log in and see my desktop running with my stuff as well as mail.app setup with all the previous mail and settings.

I could copy everything locally, but then what? Is it so really complicate?

Please give me an help.

When you say remote server you don't mean working from home correct? You mean another machine other than yours that you log into on the same network right???

Use /Applications/Directory Utility to connect to the directory server that you used to login to. Keep in mind that OS X searches in the local directory first before attempting other directories so be sure the local account and password don't match the remote user and password.

Also, I assume if you don't know how to do this that someone else set this up for you. You might want to consult with this person before continuing. Or consult with an Apple specialist on site to have his setup correctly.

That's right. Another computer of a colleague on the same network that successfully log in to an OSX Server.

Is there something really tricky? I mean, on server side everything works fine. I believe I should just use the Directory utility specifying the server I need to use, don't I?

Hi, I tried with Direcotory Utility, but it says there is no server configured on the network.

I found this document http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/User_Management_v10.5.mnl.pdf into the Apple site. Page 105.

I wonder that I need to enter into the server and from Workgroup manager authorize my computer giving some kerberos authorization. I don't know if this make sense for you. For me it doesn't, but I came from a Windows networking world and so everything is new regarding this aspect.

Directory Utility should detect OS X server on you subnet. Perhaps either your IP or DNS information is incorrect.

Kerberos will be determined by the server not the client.

Your right,...It's a Mac it should be easy right!?

Look at your colleague's Directory Utility under LDAP. What does it say? Check the IP/DNS settings on their Mac.

Who administers the server. Ask them for help if needed. I'm sure the two minute conversation will be more fruitful than posting on this forum ;-)

Finally I got it. I press the + button and wrote the server manually and it solved.
I was wondering it should have done it automatically.

Ah ****, after a successful login with the network user, I need to login in again with the local account, and now - despite the server is still in Directory Utility - I continue to get a general error message while logging in.

Any Idea?
