My macbook won't boot to CD

I want to wipe my hard drive using the disc utility in the osx disc. however when i hold c to boot to cd it gets stuck on the loading screen (light blue with apple and spinning 'working' symbol underneath it)

can someone help?

btw i have early 2008 model with 2.4 ghz processor 160gb hard drive 2 gb ram
