Yes, you can. Just boot off the disc. I've done it (several times) myself.

You can install SL using the upgrade disc if you already have a valid Leopard licence. The EULA explictly states that this is required (see section 2C). So, despite the fact that it's possible, you're not technically supposed to do so.

How long does a clean install normally take? I started mine last night and it's still going now at 11:30 am

I agree. I'm really starting to think that your drive is having issues.

Well what do you guys think are my options at this point? Hardware test says everything is fine. I have replaced hard drives in pc's before. Is it any different on a iMac? To be honest I have never opened one up before.

Update: it might be ok now. I just did another drive repair and it seems to be working perfectly. For now. I will let my girl use it all day while I watch football. If it's going to slow down again it will happen when she is on. She messes everything up.
