Hi there! This is my first post on here, so here goes! I did a search, but I am so new to Macs and this forums that I don't quite yet know how to efficiently search. I am getting a Kernel Panic error that I need help diagnosing. The unit was accidentally dropped after I tripped over the all too happy to see me dogs! After that, All I got was the "blue screen of death". I have tried reloading the OS Disk, but I get this Kernel Panic. Can someone help me figure out what is wrong?

Sounds like bad RAM to me. Is it the original memory?

You've either damaged your hard drive in the fall or maybe even dislodged the memory module. Check the module first to see if it's seated properly. Pull it out and reseat it. If the hard drive is damaged, not much you can do except replace it.

Regards.

Yes. It is the original RAM and I believe it is good. Well...it is seated correctly at least. I have disassembled the entire unit tonight out of bordom. I reassembled it, but to no availe. I still get the same error. Is there any way to check the hard drive to see if it is bad? I have been unsuccessful trying the PRAM reset.

The way to check the hard drive is to boot the iBook with your original install disk and run Disk Utility. If it's only the hard drive, you should be able to boot from your install disk.

Regards.

What are the commands for the disk utility? I do believe that I tried running that once with no response, but I can double check tonight.

Disk Utility -> First Aid tab. From there run "Verify and Repair". It should correct errors, if any. Or, it may refuse to run possibly meaning your hard drive is no longer accessible.

Regards.

Does the G4 have a PATA or a SATA hard drive? I am at the store now and don't have it with me!

All pre-2006 machines used PATA drives.

Ok. I bought a PATA drive for it. I've now got it installed. When I press "power" then "option", the computer is not recognizing the new hard drive. It recognizes the start up disk that is in it. What next?!

Did you boot up with the OSX CD/DVD and run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and either Erase or Partition the new drive?

Did you install OSX on it?

You have to format the drive using Disk Utility and install the operating system. The drive doesn't appear because it's not a startup capable disk yet.

How do I do either of those? I can not get to anything other than the start+option start up keys menu.

With the OSX DVD in the drive, hold down the C key after the startup sound. Keep it down till it starts to boot from the DVD.

Turn the computer on, insert your Mac OS X install disc and quickly press and hold the C key. Continue holding until you see the Apple logo appear. That will kick off the install process.

If after you get to the installer, the new drive does not show up, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and do what I said in my other message.

If after you get to the installer, the new drive does not show up, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu and do what I said in my other message.

At the installer window, All I see is the "load" icon (arrow), the "reload/refresh" icon (circular arrow), and the "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" icon. There is no utilities menu.

This is an iBook G4? What are the specs? You say it was dropped? Is all the ram stock? Most iBooks come with RAM soldered to the logic board then another shot under the keyboard for adding more RAM. Do you have Ram in that slot?

That is not the Installer Window. That sounds like the boot menu you get holding the Option key at startup. What happens if you click on the Mac OSX Install Disc 1 then the arrow to the right?
