external speaker/headphone problem

My iMac stopped recognizing my headphone/external speaker output, now only plays on the internal speaker (i.e., in preferences: audio output, gives only the internal option). I tried the tactics suggested by earlier gurus (utilities, to repair disc permissions etc, or a garage Band trick) to no avail. Anyone have any other suggestions?

White MacBook. iLife '09. iWork '09. Mac OS X 10.6
Is it warrantied? You might just have to send it for repair. I take it you've tried a fresh reboot?
