I was wondering if the speed of the macbook pro 13 in with the 2.26GHz processor and the 2gb of ram and the 5600 or 5400RPM hard drive runs at a good speed for some video editing?

It's do able.

Although having a faster process and more RAM does help.

Well right now I have a Pentium 4 2.4 GHZ with 512MB of ram and a 250 and a 80 GB hard drive. (PC) will it run faster than that?

There isn't a huge difference between 2.4 and 2.26 Ghz. That's a .14 difference which is tiny.

So I doubt it's going to be any faster.

A Pentium 4 is not even close in processing power to any of the Intel Core CPU's. You can't just compare the clock of a P4, AMD 64, Core 2 Duo to each other.

The new Intel CPU's are way faster than a Pentium 4 per clock.

Woah woah woah... You are going from an Intel Pentium 4 2.4 SINGLE CORE processor.... and then going to a intel core 2 duo processor 2.26 ghz processor and you are saying that it is going to be a TINY difference? You have to look at FSB which your old single core is probably 400mhz and the intel core 2 duo is 1066mhz and comes with 2gb of DDR3 not DDR2 ram which operates at 1066mhz. Now from the ram alone I heard from DDR2 to DDR3 it operates 30 percent faster which helps for programs like video editing and such. And the processor matters too.

I am going out on a limb going to say that it is going to operate much faster and smother considering the OS and the intel core 2 duo processor upgrade from your old system.

got this from another website

they say that a 2.8Ghz P4 520 does their lame test in 5:05, the Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz does the same test in 3:10, the P4 got 834 in 3DMark 06 while the Core 2 Duo got 1892, and for PCMark 05/CPU the P4 got 3522 while the Core 2 Duo got 5489

so doing the math on those numbers would say that the Core 2 Duo @ 2.13Ghz is 1.8 times faster then a P4 @ 2.8Ghz, and that's with the slowest Core 2 Duo, its not a Conroe

------

So it looks like the intel core 2 duo is 2 times faster than the p4 of 2.8 which is better than your 2.4. so maybe even the upgrade you should see 2.5 times faster with the mac processor (2.26ghz) vs your p4 2.4 processor. I bet the gap would be even better in terms of being faster.

I have a Pentium 4 3.06Ghz with HT. 2GB Ram. I have a Modded Intel Mac Mini with a 2.16Ghz C2D CPU. Running Handbreak on both machines converting the same video file takes probably 1/2 the time on the Intel Mini with C2D at 2.16Ghz than the P4. It's that way with every Video converter, Encoder and Audio encoding, converting that I have ever tried on both machines.

Don't forget L1/2 cache too.

You'll be better off w/ the MBP, as others have mentioned. Go for it!

Oh, and it is important to note that the MBP have 2 cores, not 1 like your PC.

I have the same notebook you are looking at buying. Have had it about 3 weeks. I upgraded the RAM to 4GB and the HD to 500GB for about $140. This things zips right along (and can run several programs simultaneously no problem, including Windows7 via VMware Fusion) and has a ton of storage.

I probably wont upgrade the hard drive, I was thinking about a TimeCapsule, since the only thing on my drive will be the current video I am editing and iTunes, which is only about 30GB.

Is there a reason you upgraded the RAM? Did it make the system much faster or just a little bit?

thanks

Honestly you will do just fine with a standard MacBook. 2.24GHz is lots of power and should get the job done. But you never know when the extra power will come in handy, so if you have the money, definitely go for the MBP.

I just wanted more than 2GB of ram. I wanted to be able to run several applications at once (including Windows7) and still have a quick machine.

When I want raw power, I use my PC -- Quad-core running @ 3.5GHz w/ 8GB of RAM.

Well I won't be doing much and I don't mind if it takes a little longer. It will definitely be faster than my PC.

When I get my new mac I'm going to try and configure a PC to run my FLight Simulator flawlessly (except for the fact that it will be vista :p)
