Time Machine taking ages..

Just wondering..but I have 118Gbs worth of stuff on my mac, and its backing up really really slowly, like i could take a full 24 hours.. is this normal ??

If it's the first backup that Time Machine is doing, yes it will take a long time to backup 118 GB. However, it shouldn't take 24 hours.

Make sure nothing else is going on in the background while running Time Machine. Also, I'm assuming you're backing up to an external USB or Firewire drive.

So ideally I should turn all apps off and go to sleep to let it do its thing?
yeah external USB.

on a 2008 macbook it should NOT take 24hrs for 118GB!

it would only take 5 or so on my "ancient" 2006 MBP

120 gigs just took me just under an hour.
