I am still on 10.4 at present and want to install 10.6 (Is this the Snow Leopard one?)

I'm looking at the cost and it seems very cheap for the Snow Leopard OS?? ($29 here for example Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.) ???)

Do I have to buy Leopard and then buy Snow Leopard or can I go from Tiger 10.4 (Which Im on now), to Snow Leopard 10.6?

It has been widely reported that the Snow leopard install disks will install over 10.4

Great, thanks.

Does 'install over' mean I will lose all of my documents etc if I don't back them up on an external?

I think there is something about buying iLife separately as well. So totally it will be cost of SL+iLife. (since Tiger didn't come with iLife)

That's patently false. Tiger machines did indeed come with iLife.

Always do a back-up before any big upgrade

In fact - always have a back-up - period

Since no one answered your question, it's fairly easy.

1) make a backup
2) insert 29 dollar Snow Leopard disk
3) run the installer
4) find something to do for a half hour to 40 minutes
5) enjoy the new OS.

Thanks for the replies. Will be purchasing Snow Leopard this evening.

If I copy my whole 50gb iTunes folder from my 'music' folder, to my External HDD, can I put the folder straight back into the 'music' folder once Snow Leopard OS has been installed, and have iTunes running exactly how it is now on 10.4?

I have bought Snow Leopard - is it possible to do an upgrade without losing all my documents/settings rather than a completely new install?

If possible, can anyone advise how?

Hi I've jsut done what you're about to do, literally 10mins ago.. and all my items/documents and applications (just noticed) appeared as normal. Desktop items, iphone apps etc.. from 10.4 -> 10.6

I didn't reformat (disk utility) the hard drive when I booted from the 10.6 installer DVD, just selected the existing HD and installed the OS 10.6 on it. I didn't care if I lost my items they were backed up. But I suggest you do anyway.

Thanks! I have everything backed up on my external, but I haven't enough space to store my music and will cry if it all goes!!
